Get both directions in one place.
Hours and minutes to decimal hours
Divide minutes by 60 and add the result to the whole hours. For example, 45 minutes is 0.75 of an hour, so 2 hours 45 minutes equals 2.75 decimal hours.
This is useful when a spreadsheet, payroll system, project log or report expects a decimal value rather than hours and minutes. The reverse converter is shown on the same result card.
Quick conversion examples
| Time | Decimal hours |
|---|---|
| 15 minutes | 0.25 |
| 30 minutes | 0.50 |
| 45 minutes | 0.75 |
| 1h 20m | 1.3333 |
Why 1 hour 30 minutes is 1.5 hours
Minutes use a base of 60, while the digits after a decimal point represent fractions of an hour. Therefore 1 hour 30 minutes is 1 + 30 ÷ 60 = 1.5 hours. Entering 1.30 as decimal hours means 1 hour 18 minutes.
Convert in the other direction
Multiply decimal hours by 60, round to the nearest whole minute, and split that total into hours and remaining minutes. For example, 1.999 hours rounds to 120 minutes and displays as 2 hours 0 minutes, rather than 1 hour 60 minutes. Negative decimal durations display with one minus sign applying to the entire duration.
The forward conversion displays four decimal places. Keep the original inputs when a downstream system requires a different rounding policy; the “payroll-friendly” display is a convenience, not a payroll rounding rule.
Use Time Calculator to add multiple durations, or Time Duration to measure the interval between two clock times.
